Worked with Gene, his father and brother Tony at one of the few games the family ever did together at Bentworth High School in the mid seventies. Gene deserves to be where he is as he was always sharp on the field and knew the game inside and out. Take charge kind of guy but always a gentleman.
As a player at Pitt in the early 70′s, Gene Sr. was one of the top basketball officials in the country. The apple must fall far from the tree, because Gene Sr. was a true professional, and was known for helping players throughout the game. A first class man.
Hi Gene, this is your old college buddy Mike Surin. I hope all is well with you & your family. Would love to hear from you sometime and get caught up whenever you get a chance.
Well Gene, looks like you blew the Mia-Pitt fumble call. First and foremost it was the officials responsibility to find which team recovered the ball regardless whether the linesman signaled a touchdown. You looked at the linesman and accepted his call instead of completing your job of finding out who won the fumble. Official # 40 was in position to see the fumble and you never consulted him. #105 was close by too but you just turned around and signaled touchdown. Perhaps being a Pittsburg fan from Washington, Pa interfered with your interest to find out who recovered the ball. I am from Pittsburg and I have never seen a more shameful call.
GENE, MY FRIEND , I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR GOOD TIMES OFFICEING FOOTBALL GAMES. WHO IS THIS TOM THOMAS WHO DON’T KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. EVERY WEEK I LOOK TO SEE WERE YOU AND TONY ARE AT. WHY DO THESE PEOPLE THINK WHAT THEY THINK. THEY NEVER MENTION HOW MANY TIMES PITTSBURGH LOST WHEN YOU WERE ON THERE GAMES. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AND HECK ON THESE MONDAY MORNING QB’S.

This is Gene Steratore Jr. during his time as a field judge…it was on a cold, snowy day.
