All of the attention is (rightfully) on the Denver-San Diego mess, but there was another very controversial call this weekend. In the Wisconsin-Fresno State game, a Fresno State fumble was overturned after a replay review. What makes this unique is that the replay review was apparently badly blown.
According to Colin Cowherd on his radio show this morning, this was an absolutely insane call. He has no doubt that the replay official should be fired, and they should all be very embarassed. I guess the difference is that this call didn’t quite cost Wisconsin the game, while the Hochuli call very definately cost the Chargers their game.
I didn’t see the play, so I can’t comment for sure. If you saw it, what did you think? Was it an obviously blown call, or did they get it right with the review?
Also, did anyone catch the name of that official? I can’t find it anywhere.

The call in the Fresno State/Wisconsin game was much, much worse than the mistake made in the San Diego/Denver game for one major reason it was not made at game speed. Basically the gist of the call was the Fresno State receiver caught the ball took at least three to four steps with the ball, changed hands and tucked the ball prior to the Badger defender bringing a hand down directly on the ball and knocking it loose. Wisconsin clearly recovered the ball and on the field it was correctly ruled as a fumble and subsequent recovery by Wisconsin. The replay referee somehow looked at the replay and came up with incomplete pass. Just take into account that the replay had to show incontrovertable evidence of a bad ruling on the field and it is clear that the replay official made a blatant attempt to change the outcome of the game. Cowherd is right….this guy should be fired. Luckily the Badgers were able to come up with the victory but this guy should be fired.
It was one of the worst calls in history. Up there with that onside kick that screwed Oklahoma.
It was pretty preposterous. The guy caught the ball, secured it, and then turned up field before it being jarred. I think the most maddening aspect from a Wisconsin’s fan’s perspective is they somehow could have deemed the replay indisputable visual evidence. It would have been a shame if it made the difference between winning and losing. If the call is made correctly Wisconsin is up at minimum 16-7 going into the fourth, and as much as 21-7. In what was a defensive battle, that’s a substantial margin. Instead Fresno State went on to score and it was 13-10 at that point. A lead which Wisconsin held onto, in nail biting fashion. Wisconsin is not returning to Fresno anytime soon and we saw why Pat Hill insisted on having his own officials. Turnabout would be fair play next season when FSU comes to Madison, but the Big Ten is above that kind of behavior.
That call was unreal bad. The NCAA should be conducting an investigation on the replay official. Who makes such a blatantly horrible call unless they have skin in the game? That jerk in the booth probably had his home mortgaged on the outcome of the game.
Wow. Get the tar and feathers. The NCAA and WAC are pathetic if that idiot is given another paycheck.
WOW! That is the worst call I have ever seen in the replay era. It has to be really tough to be an on-field official, make a call, have it challenged, then reversed from upstairs; then go home and see that you got it right and some goofball overturned it. I’d be sick.
I am very supportive of officials and I feel real bad for Ed H. this week, but his call was an honest mistake in real time. This was a blatant screw-up of a call that was right to begin with. I’m not a big conspiracy theorist, but something is up with this. Yikes!
no matter how often they mess around with replay rules, there is still going to be mistakes. its just as part of the game as a player making a mistake.
